my day off....

I got out some markers today and decided to take a whirl at some drawings. things started off frustrating because i just haven't been very consistent with using my hand. sadly. here are some of the drawings i did based off some hair style images i had in a book for school. Today was a refresher ..... tomorrow will be better.

Bloggin thoughts....

Maybe it's just me and the fact that i haven't spent enough time understanding blogger.... but there are a lot of things I wish i could do with this web engine that i just don't quite understand. 1. why can't i show blogs i follow on my actually blog page... instead of in my profile? 2. What if i want to upload songs or upload more links? I'm not quite getting it.... and sometimes when i view other blogger sites i feel like they've customized it in a way that's fitting for their info. 3. There's been some talk that wordpress is a better bloggin site. What's the difference and why should I start over? 4. Sometimes i feel like my blog goes all over the place. I originally created the thing to upload pictures of hairstyles and crafties i do. Lately... haven't been snappin photos of hair and definitely DO NOT have the time to do personal artings (which is saddening).

anyway..... i hope to get this stuff figured out soon..... now that im finding extra time during the day at work to upload a post now and again..... i might actually invest in getting my site the way i want it.

If you don't know of sanna annukka.... you should. Fabulous iconography and album art!

My dream.

So i have to post about this really quick
I had a dream last night that was just so fun. First off..... I was at a pool side concert with deerhoof. If you don't know them.... you should http://www.spinner.com/2008/09/09/deerhoof-offend-maggie-free-mp3-of-the-day-exclusive/

The audience was swimming around while the band played on the side.
Then my wallet contents got stolen, but as it turns out i just got a new debit card (in real life).... that hasnt been activated yet. THe sucker couldn't take any money out. It ended up being a great evening even though somone tried to rip me off. Splashing around in a pool.... while a band plays on the side.... that seriously needs to happen for real!

On a lighter note.....

I want to convince my brother to make me this coffee table.... and does anyone have any good ideas for how to construct your own light box for screen printing?

I love retro..... and I especially appreciate it when arranged smart. Organized clutter if you will......

Design + Travel.

It's been awhile since I've traveled overseas. One of the most memorable things about Europe to me when I studied abroad the fall of 2006 was Switzerland's minimal yet highly functional design. A part of me wanted to scream and dislike everything about design there for its repetitive use of Helvetica, but after walking around the city enough and experiencing their world as a whole.... it all really made a lot of sense.

I guess that's why part of me will be changed forever in my journey to love and appreciate design/art. My experiences overseas pushed me to see things differently and gives more meaning to everything i do not only in design but in my life. Living in Europe changed me. I spent a lot more time getting in touch with my spiritual life. I picked up St. Augustine's Confessions (one of about 4 copies left from previous roommates in our apartment). The book contained so much doubt, faith and poetry.... that I couldn't put it down. St. Augustine knew how to make highly philosophical ideas sound like nothing but a simple love poem.

I challenged myself in Europe; asking myself "why?" over and over with everything i did and made that semester. I grew as a designer and a person. Not only did the new environment of Europe make me more vulnerable..... it just allowed my mind to grow and be challenged in ways I never thought possible.

I guess that's why... when I finally come to my point... we can sit and search all day looking for really new and innovative ways to design through the internet. But for me.... and from my experiences.... nothing beats actually walking around in a new country where design is vastly different from anything you've ever experienced. You can't create a world in America that resembles Eastern Turkey or the Vatican. You just cant.
